Ouro Preto!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Ok, so we´ve just spent about a week in Ouro Preto relaxing and planning some of our trip. As we already said there are alot of Churches there and the villiage/town has loads of cobbled streets that go up and down. Whilst we were there we also visited a mine which was very cool, you could swim in the lake at the bottom and to get there you had to go on this crazy little mine cart which was fun!

We met loads of nice people at the hostel and had a really good time, staying somewhere for a week was really good as we got to know the town really well and even got to know some of the locals in the shops we went to. We´ve started cooking for ourselves all the time too cos it saves so much money as brazil is quite expensive comapred to the rest of South America. Whilst we were there we went out to town with a brazilian guy we met and an English couple, we went to a music club and had a few beer. was a really good night and we met some of the locals. I don´t think the bar was used to having English people there because they ran out of beer..... Shocking!! So we had to move on to Caiparinias which is basically a glass full of suger cane rum, lime and suger.... for about 2 pounds. Another reason we wanted to stay in Ouro Preto was because we decided to spend christmas there... The hostel has amazing views over the town, the air is cool and we thought it would be a nice place to stay!

We decided to buy some Turkey for christmas day so we could have a proper christmas dinner, but when we opened it it urned out to be lots and lots of turkey necks!! Yummy! We cooked them anyway, they were a bit chewy but not too bad.... we also had sausages wrapped in bacon which was good. Luckily santa knew where we were so we both got a little present! Had champagne for breakfast too.... so it wasn´t all bad! On christmas eve they also had a parade through the town with a big brass band and a Brazilian santa giving out presents!

So on boxing day we left Ouro Preto on an over night bus to come back to hot a sweaty Rio! Our bus broke down on the way here so it took a while but it meant we got a bit more sleep. When we got here we checked in to our hostel, Samba Villa, and headed of with some fellow travellers to see Christ The Redeemer, after 4 different vehicles and numerous queues, we finally got there with the hordes of tourists! It was really great to see it, the view up there is amazing you can pretty much see the whole of Rio, the christ is pretty impressive too if you push your way through the photo snapping tourists that is! So after that we decided to come back to our hostel and relax in our air conditioned dorm room! Tomorrow we´re heading to Ipanema Beach to have a beach day. We´re staying in Rio till the 1st Jan. then were gonna get on a bus for 26 hours to make our way to Uruguay!
